Srijonshil Gaibandha Foundation, a local volunteer organisation, has constructed a house inspired by the ‘Khudi Bari’ model in Sidhai village, a remote riverine char area of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila. The house was completed after five days of construction work and handed over to the local community on Thursday. ActionAid Bangladesh supported the construction initiative. Local residents hope the structure will provide safe shelter during floods.
With the aim of addressing climate change and building disaster-resilient communities, Srijonshil Gaibandha Foundation was selected as a National Youth Partner under ActionAid Bangladesh’s ‘Youth-Led Climate Adaptation’ initiative. Among 147 applications submitted from across the country, the organisation was selected for a grant of BDT 130,000. Adding BDT 20,000 from its own funds, the organisation invested a total of BDT 150,000 in constructing the Khudi Bari in the char area of Gaibandha to promote climate-resilient housing and strengthen local disaster preparedness.
Young members of Srijonshil Gaibandha Foundation constructed the house after learning the construction techniques of Khudi Bari, designed by renowned Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum. With support from the local community, the youth used bamboo and steel components to build the structure. FACE Bangladesh provided technical assistance for the initiative.
According to the organisers, Sidhai village is geographically isolated from the mainland, despite being part of Gaibandha District. When the water level of the Brahmaputra River rises, the village experiences flooding. During severe floods, extensive surrounding areas remain submerged in waist-deep water, causing immense hardship for local residents. Many families are forced to leave their homes and move to higher ground. Others, unable to find safe elevated locations, take shelter on makeshift banana-tree rafts or in boats.
During floods, residents also struggle to protect their children, valuables, important documents and land deeds. Against this backdrop, the elevated Khudi Bari-style structure is expected to serve as a safe refuge for community members and help protect essential belongings during emergencies.
The house measures 10 feet in width, 10 feet in length and approximately 13 feet in height. Sajeda Begum, 45, a resident of Sidhai village, donated the land for its construction. She said she had provided the space so that local people could use the structure as a safe place during floods.
Md. Mehedi Hasan, Founder and President of Srijonshil Gaibandha Foundation, said the initiative was undertaken after considering the challenges faced by people living in riverine char areas. The project cost approximately BDT 150,000. During floods, the house can accommodate seven to eight people.
He added that the organisation had obtained permission from FACE Bangladesh, the organisation associated with architect Marina Tabassum’s Khudi Bari design, to construct the house following the model. With support from government and non-government organisations, the foundation hopes to build more such houses in char areas in the future.
Voices of the Beneficiaries
Monirul Islam, a resident of Sidhai village, said that floods bring constant anxiety about the safety of homes and essential belongings. He believes that having a structure like this would be highly beneficial for the community.
Another resident, Shamim Hossain, highlighted the difficulties of protecting important documents during floods. He said that a safe structure of this kind would allow residents to store essential documents securely and reduce their worries.
Rina Begum, another resident of the village, said that people previously had to take shelter on banana-tree rafts or seek higher ground during floods. She expressed hope that the new structure would provide significant support to the community. According to her, ordinary residents, particularly children and older people, would be able to use the house as a place of refuge and safety when needed.
