Community Waste Collection and Awareness Campaign Held in Kamarjani to Promote a Clean Environment

A Community Waste Collection and Awareness Campaign was organized in Kamarjani Union of Gaibandha Sadar Upazila with the aim of promoting a clean and healthy environment. The campaign took place on Tuesday, 4 February 2026, along the banks of the Brahmaputra River.

Held under the slogan “Together for a Clean, Green and Healthy Environment,” the initiative witnessed active participation from local residents, women members, and young volunteers. As part of the campaign, various types of waste were collected from the riverbank and surrounding areas, while awareness messages were shared to prevent environmental pollution.

The program was organized by Srijonshil Gaibandha, co-organized by the National Youth Forum (NYF), with support from Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Bangladesh. Volunteers distributed waste baskets to local households and highlighted the importance of proper waste management practices.

Organizers informed that on the first day of the campaign, 10 families received waste baskets and soap. In total, 30 families will be provided with these materials in phases. The primary objective of this initiative is to promote household-level cleanliness practices within the community.

In addition, families were encouraged to deposit plastic bottles in exchange for vegetable seeds to establish home gardens. The distributed seeds included pumpkin, red amaranth, stem amaranth, cucumber, okra, sponge gourd, Malabar spinach, and bitter gourd. According to the organizers, this innovative approach aims to reduce plastic waste while encouraging nutritious food production.

The organizers emphasized that environmental pollution, particularly plastic waste in rivers and surrounding areas, has been increasing rapidly, posing serious threats to water flow and biodiversity. To address this challenge, they plan to continue similar community-based awareness and waste management activities regularly.

A local woman participant shared her experience, saying, “We never thought about separating waste like this before. Today’s initiative taught us a lot, and we are very happy to receive vegetable seeds.”

Youth volunteers stated that the campaign’s main goal is not only to clean the area but also to bring positive behavioral change among people. They expressed hope that this initiative would contribute to building a clean, green, and healthy environment in Kamarjani.


কামারজানিতে পরিচ্ছন্ন পরিবেশ গড়তে কমিউনিটি বর্জ্য সংগ্রহ ও সচেতনতা কার্যক্রম অনুষ্ঠিত

গাইবান্ধা সদর উপজেলার কামারজানি ইউনিয়নে পরিষ্কার–পরিচ্ছন্ন ও স্বাস্থ্যকর পরিবেশ গড়ে তোলার লক্ষ্যে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে “কমিউনিটি ওয়েস্ট কালেকশন অ্যান্ড অ্যাওয়ারনেস ক্যাম্পেইন”। মঙ্গলবার, ৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৬ ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদের তীরবর্তী এলাকায় এ কার্যক্রমের আয়োজন করা হয়।

“Together for a Clean, Green and Healthy Environment” স্লোগানকে সামনে রেখে আয়োজিত এই উদ্যোগে স্থানীয় বাসিন্দা, নারী সদস্য ও তরুণ স্বেচ্ছাসেবকরা সক্রিয়ভাবে অংশগ্রহণ করেন। কর্মসূচির অংশ হিসেবে নদীর পাড় ও আশপাশের এলাকা থেকে বিভিন্ন ধরনের বর্জ্য সংগ্রহ করা হয় এবং পরিবেশ দূষণ রোধে জনসচেতনতামূলক বার্তা প্রদান করা হয়।

এই কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করে সৃজনশীল গাইবান্ধা, সহ-আয়োজক হিসেবে যুক্ত ছিল ন্যাশনাল ইয়ুথ ফোরাম (NYF) এবং সহযোগিতায় ছিল Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Bangladesh। স্বেচ্ছাসেবকরা স্থানীয় জনগণের মাঝে বর্জ্য রাখার ঝুড়ি বিতরণ করেন এবং সঠিকভাবে ময়লা-আবর্জনা ব্যবস্থাপনার গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরেন।

আয়োজকদের পক্ষ থেকে জানানো হয়, কার্যক্রমের প্রথম দিনে ১০টি পরিবারকে বর্জ্য সংগ্রহের ঝুড়ি ও সাবান প্রদান করা হয়েছে। পর্যায়ক্রমে মোট ৩০টি পরিবারকে এসব উপকরণ প্রদান করা হবে। এর মাধ্যমে পরিবারভিত্তিক পরিচ্ছন্নতা চর্চা গড়ে তোলাই এ উদ্যোগের মূল লক্ষ্য।

এছাড়াও, প্লাস্টিক বোতল জমা দেওয়ার বিনিময়ে অংশগ্রহণকারী পরিবারগুলোকে সবজি বাগান করার জন্য বিভিন্ন ধরনের বীজ বিতরণ করা হয়। বিতরণকৃত বীজের মধ্যে ছিল চালকুমড়া, লাল শাক, ডাটা শাক, শসা, ঢেঁড়স, ধুন্দল, পুঁইশাক ও করলা। আয়োজকরা জানান, প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্য হ্রাস এবং পুষ্টিকর খাদ্য উৎপাদনে জনগণকে উৎসাহিত করতেই এই ব্যতিক্রমী উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়েছে।

আয়োজকদের মতে, নদী ও আশপাশের পরিবেশে প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্যের পরিমাণ দিন দিন বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে, যা পানি প্রবাহ ও জীববৈচিত্র্যের জন্য মারাত্মক হুমকি। এ পরিস্থিতি মোকাবিলায় স্থানীয় জনগণকে সম্পৃক্ত করে নিয়মিত এ ধরনের সচেতনতামূলক কার্যক্রম চালিয়ে যাওয়ার পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে।

কর্মসূচিতে অংশ নেওয়া এক স্থানীয় নারী বলেন, “আমরা আগে এভাবে আলাদা করে ময়লা ফেলার কথা ভাবিনি। আজকের এই উদ্যোগ আমাদের অনেক কিছু শিখিয়েছে। সবজি বীজ পেয়ে আমরা খুবই আনন্দিত।”

তরুণ স্বেচ্ছাসেবকরা জানান, এই উদ্যোগের মূল লক্ষ্য শুধু এলাকা পরিষ্কার করা নয়, বরং মানুষের আচরণ ও অভ্যাসে ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন আনা। তাদের প্রত্যাশা, এ কার্যক্রমের মাধ্যমে কামারজানিতে একটি পরিচ্ছন্ন, সবুজ ও স্বাস্থ্যকর পরিবেশ গড়ে উঠবে।
